Artist Tapani Raittila:

CROQUIS DRAWINGS ARE NOT EASY TO JUDGE

“That’s exactly how it is. When you eliminate things you can also make mistakes, I readily admit that. Croquis is done quickly, which has its advantages. It’s an entirely different thing if you make a drawing slowly. A drawing in which one ‘examines’ something, as the saying goes, differs from croquis, which is based on risk, and when it succeeds, is born under a lucky star. Matisse used to say to his students that they must be able to draw a man who falls from the fifth floor — that fast.” (Tapani Raittila in interview with Riitta Valorinta, published in Raittila’s exhibition book, 2007)
